Tree Aid - Supporting communities in rural Africa to meet basic needs and secure vital income through sustainable use of trees and woodlands. Request for support for The Zoundweogo Women's Land Restoration & Agro-Forestry Project. £7,500.
Busoga Trust - Providing wells and bore holes and harvesting rainwater in rural Uganda. Agreed to continue long term support with £2,500 p.a. for three years.
Karuna - Countering child labour and discrimination against girls in Pune, India. Funding required to expand educational work to a further 1180 child labourers and take gender awareness work to 250 adolescent girls, 300 school-going girls and 320 boys. Cost of the project is £23,000 per annum for three years. Agreed £10,000 p.a. for three years.
ORBIS - Dedicated to eliminating avoidable blindness worldwide. Project forms part of their first programme in India to strengthen resources to tackle childhood blindness where paediatric services are non-existent. The aim is to strengthen paediatric eye care services and establish a rural outreach programme in partnership with an Ophthalmology Institute. £5,000.
Buskaid - Helping young black musicians in South African Townships. A dedicated Music School opened in 1999 and offers specialised music tuition to fifty youngsters between 10 and 23. Agreed £5,000 which represents 50% of the cost of support staff at the Music School for one year.
International Childcare Trust - Funding for Hanwella Vocational Training Centre for Internally Displaced and Marginalised Young People in Sri Lanka. The project aims to build self-confidence and hope among Sri Lanka's young people by steering them towards economic independence through training in marketable skills. £2,000.
Computer Aid International - Joint proposal with Computers for Schools Kenya which aims to extend the provision of computer education to every secondary school in the country. Funding sought for a specific project which will introduce the use of computers in education in eleven Kenyan state secondary schools each of which will receive a new teaching laboratory, teaching training and comprehensive technical support, benefiting an estimated 5,500 students. Project cost £26,050. Agreed £5,000 on confirmation that balance has been raised.
